I am probably writing this article at a time when many people across the country are going through a very difficult time financially. The Reserve Bank has just hiked the interest rate by 75 basis points – the sharpest increase since September 2002. This means the repo rate or the rate at which the central bank lends money to banks is now 5.5 percent. The prime lending rate used by banks when lending to the public now starts at about nine percent. The year-on-year inflation figure for June jumped to to 7.4 percent, pushed by a sharp increase in food…

Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality can hardly raise a third of its salary bill from the monthly revenue collections because a growing number of residents can no longer afford to pay for services due to unemployment. This was revealed by Premier Sisi Ntombela when she met with the local business community following increasing concerns over the worsening level of service delivery in the area. The situation is so bad that some operators have indicated they might have to relocate to other towns or provinces due to the erratic availability of water and electricity as well as the deteriorating state of the roads,…
Free State police say they have noted with concern the spread of unfounded messages on different social media platforms by unknown people making false claims about crimes that never happened. Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane said the false reports do not only cause alarm in communities but force the police to use their limited resources trying to confirm the cases instead of focusing on crime prevention. “These incidents are placing a serious strain on our resources, which would eventually negatively affect our response where a genuine case is reported,” said Motswenyane in a statement. According to the statement,…
