MORE than 200 learners from Kagisho Secondary School in Phahameng, Bloemfontein, fell ill in a suspected food poisoning outbreak during matric study camp over the weekend.
The Free State Department of Health reported that by Monday, 214 learners had exhibited symptoms consistent with food poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and fever.
“On Sunday afternoon, several learners began reporting symptoms consistent with food poisoning,” Free State Department of Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said.
The outbreak occurred during a camp attended by approximately 355 matric students.
Health authorities mobilised emergency medical services, transporting affected learners to various health facilities.
A total of 142 students were treated at Poly Clinic, 67 at Pelonomi Hospital and five at Pelonomi Netcare.
While most learners received immediate treatment and were discharged, on Monday night eight remained under observation at Pelonomi Hospital pending blood test results.
“Currently, only eight children remain in casualty awaiting results from blood samples taken earlier,” Mvambi said.
“They are receiving intravenous fluids and are showing no signs of serious illness,.”
Mvambi said the department’s outbreak response team was monitoring the situation to determine the scope of the outbreak and respond to any emerging developments.
“Control measures are being implemented to prevent further spread of illness,” he said.
Parents have been urged to monitor their children’s health and report any persistent symptoms to nearby health facilities. – Staff Reporter
