PAKISTAN stunned South Africa with a record-breaking run chase, securing a six-wicket victory in Karachi as they fine-tuned preparations for their ICC Champions Trophy title defence on Wednesday.
Chasing an imposing target of 354, Pakistan powered home with six balls to spare, thanks to brilliant centuries from Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha.
Their 260-run stand for the fourth wicket set a new ODI record for Pakistan, surpassing their previous highest chase of 349 for four against Australia in 2022.
Rizwan’s unbeaten 122 off 128 balls included nine fours and three sixes, while Salman’s 134 off just 103 deliveries featured 16 fours and two sixes.
“When Agha and I were batting, we set targets. We failed a couple of times, but mostly achieved them,” Rizwan said.
“When God helps, you break all kinds of records. We gave our full effort.”
Earlier, South Africa posted a formidable 352 for five after winning the toss and electing to bat at the National Bank Cricket Arena.
Heinrich Klaasen top-scored with a rapid 87 off 56 balls, while captain Temba Bavuma (82) and Matthew Breetzke (83) also made valuable contributions.
Breetzke continued his remarkable ODI start, following up his 150 on debut with another solid knock.
His 233 runs in two matches surpassed the 195-run tally set by West Indies legend Desmond Haynes in his first two ODIs back in 1978.
However, South Africa suffered a setback when wicketkeeper Klaasen sustained a thumb injury and was forced to hand over the gloves to Kyle Verreynne in the 32nd over.
With this win, Pakistan advances to the final of the tri-series against New Zealand on Friday. The Proteas will now turn their attention to the Champions Trophy, where they face Afghanistan in their opening match on 21 February.
Pakistan, the 2017 champions and tournament hosts, kick off proceedings against New Zealand on 19 February.
