IN a monumental twist of South African football history, newly-promoted Magesi FC from Limpopo shocked defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns with a stunning 2-1 victory in the Carling Knockout Cup final held at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
The match, hailed as the ultimate “David and Goliath” clash, saw Magesi achieve what seemed impossible, becoming the first newly-promoted team to win South Africa’s League Cup.
The highly anticipated encounter drew football fans from across the nation, with the Free State proudly hosting this historic event.
The Free State Stadium buzzed with electrifying energy as Sundowns, heavy favourites, looked poised to secure another piece of silverware.
Sundowns controlled the opening half, with Iqraam Rayners giving the Brazilians a deserved lead in the 36th minute.
It could have been more, but Magesi’s captain and goalkeeper, Elvis Chipezeze, stood as an immovable force, delivering five crucial saves to keep his team in the contest.
His heroics in goal laid the foundation for what was to come.
Trailing at halftime, Magesi came out rejuvenated, displaying newfound attacking intent.
Just three minutes after the restart, Tshepo Kakora stunned the crowd with a clinical equaliser for Dikwena tša Meetse (The Crocodiles of the Water).
The underdogs found belief, while Sundowns were restricted to long-range attempts, unable to bypass Chipezeze’s brilliance.
As the game edged toward extra time, Magesi delivered the final blow in the 87th minute.
Delano Abrahams scrambled in a corner kick with his knee after a flicked header, sending the Free State Stadium into raptures.
Despite relentless pressure from Sundowns in the closing minutes, Magesi held firm to seal an unforgettable triumph.
Chipezeze, who earned R400 000 in man-of-the-match awards throughout the tournament, was instrumental in guiding Magesi through a challenging path that included defeating MTN8 winners Orlando Pirates in the round of 16.
“This is the greatest chapter in our club’s history,” said Chipezeze, his voice filled with emotion.
“We believed in ourselves even when no one else did. This win is for Limpopo, for our supporters, and for all the underdogs out there.”
Hosting the final was a proud moment for the Free State, cementing the province’s reputation as a hub for major sporting events.
The thrilling encounter not only brought prestige to Bloemfontein but also showcased the unpredictability and magic of South African football.
