SERGEANT Nombi Bokamoso Peter, a detective with the South African Police Service (SAPS)’s family violence, child protection and sexual investigations unit in the Free State, has been named the overall winner in the legal sector category at the 13th South African Heroine Awards.
The annual awards ceremony, which celebrates women making significant contributions to society, took place last Saturday at Sun City in the North West.
Peter, who also serves on the police’s Mangaung district serial rapist task team, has dedicated her career to combating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
Her passion for justice is deeply personal, rooted in her own experience as a rape survivor at the age of nine – a tragedy that ultimately motivated her to join law enforcement and make a difference in the lives of others.
“I want to do more for victims of GBVF. I want to put more rapists behind bars,” Peter said.
“I have managed to put 32 offenders away, with some serving life sentences, and I have secured over 330 years of prison time for rapists.
“I promise the community I serve that I will continue fighting.”
Born in Thaba Nchu in the Free State, Peter holds a bachelor’s degree in forensic investigation and diplomas in policing and human resources management.
Her tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed, earning admiration from provincial and national leaders.
Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae expressed pride in Peter’s achievement, noting its impact on the fight against GBVF.
“To have a woman from our province recognised nationally for her work is truly wonderful and inspiring,” the premier said.
“I am immensely proud of Sergeant Peter for her dedication to her work.
“We are confident that victory against the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide will be achieved with people like her on our side.
“I would like to congratulate her for winning the award and wish her the very best in the future.”
The Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, also commended Peter.
“We are immensely proud of detective Sergeant Peter. This is an example of the pockets of excellence that exist in the SAPS, especially in the detective environment,” he said, emphasising her role as a beacon of hope and justice.
