A PRISONER at the Mangaung Correctional Centre has been slapped with a life sentence after he was convicted of raping a fellow inmate.
Jeffrey Bona, aged 42, was already serving 20 years for robbery and 10 years for attempted murder when he raped the victim on more than one occasion in 2021.
The victim reported the attacks to the authorities, leading to the accused man’s appearance at the Bloemfontein Regional Court.
After his conviction, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) urged the court not to deviate from the prescribed life sentence, arguing the accused had shown no remorse and was already incarcerated when he committed the latest offence.
Accordingly, the court sentenced Bona to life imprisonment for rape.
“The conviction and sentence confirm the commitment of the National Prosecuting Authority to continue the fight against any form of crime, whether committed by the public or persons already in prison,” NPA regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said in a statement. – Staff Reporter
