Mangaung Metro Municipality speaker Mxolisi Siyonzana has been nominated to take over as the new executive mayor of the city.
The Free State capital has not had a substantive mayor since Olly Mlamleli was ousted in a no-confidence vote in August last year.
Siyonzana could assume the reins as early as Friday if elected at a scheduled special council meeting.
ANC Free State Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) coordinator Paseka Nompondo told a media briefing the party has completed the process of selecting a candidate for the post.
“It was an intensive selection process which involved the officials of the National Executive Committee who conducted interviews of candidates recommended by the ANC Regional Task Team of Mangaung and ratified by the IPC,” said Nompondo on Wednesday.
The other candidates interviewed for the post are ANC Women’s League Mangaung chairperson Mapaseka Nkoane and regional task team member Millicent Motingoe.
“The IPC is satisfied that the process was conducted fairly and those that were recommended demonstrated capability,” said Nompondo.
“We have a firm belief that the election of the executive mayor will go a long way in providing leadership to the institution and steer the municipality in the right path of dealing with service delivery challenges experienced by the community.”
IPC convenor Mxolisi Dukwana said the party has confidence Siyonzana will be able to take the city forward and address all the challenges faced.
Siyonzana could not be drawn to point out his key priority areas saying he will be able to do so after putting together a mayoral committee and drawing up an action plan.
