Two suspects are expected to appear in court soon facing armed robbery charges after they were tracked by Petrus Steyn police following an attack on a tuckshop in Mamafubedu.
All stolen items were recovered by the police within a few hours as well as an unlicensed firearm and ammunition allegedly used in the robbery.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele said the police received a complaint of a business robbery at about 1800 hours on Thursday.
The tuckshop owner was robbed of three cellphones, an undisclosed amount of cash and groceries before they fled the scene on foot.
The pair was spotted by community members at a hiking spot before getting a lift from a Lesotho-registered truck.
“The police pursued the truck on the R707 towards Lindley and caught up with it,” said Makhele.
“They stopped the driver and . . . found the two suspects inside the truck.
“Upon searching them, a 9mm pistol and live ammunition, three cellphones, cash and suspected stolen items were found in their possession.”
The suspects, aged 39 and 44 and from Ntha near Lindley, were immediately arrested.
They will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as armed robbery.
They will appear in the Petrus Steyn Magistrate Court on Monday.
