Free State police have arrested two people in separate incidents after they were found with vehicles believed to be stolen.
At about 4am today, members of the Mangaung Tactical Reaction Team (TRT) pounced on a house in Bergman Square following a tip-off and found a vehicle allegedly stolen in Welkom last year, parked in a garage.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele said the vehicle, a Kia Picanto, was reported stolen in Welkom in August 2020.
“The vehicle was confiscated and a 34-year-old man was arrested,” said Makhele.
“He is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court soon on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property.”
In the other incident, Fezile Dabi District TRT members arrested a man they found with a suspected stolen bakkie in Welkom on Tuesday after receiving information.
The man, who was arrested at a house in Lakeside Extension 5, was found with a Nissan NP200 with a Gauteng registration.
The chassis and engine numbers had been tampered with.
The man identified himself as the owner of the house and upon searching the premises, police also found an assortment of goods believed to be stolen as well.
The man was found with, among others, a bag containing what looked like unprocessed diamonds and gold nugget, a COVID-19 tester machine, a Skyworth 75-inch smart TV, Mitex Aircon, a mountain bike and others which he failed to account for.
The confiscated items are believed to have been stolen in Welkom.
The man was arrested for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and property.
He will appear in court soon.
