The Free State Department of Education is recruiting about 20 000 education assistants and general school assistants to be deployed across the province.
The initiative is part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme aimed at giving jobs to South Africans, particularly the youth.
“The department is looking to recruit 11 211 education assistants and 7 791 general school assistants under this programme,” said a statement issued by the department’s spokesperson Howard Ndaba.
Successful candidates are expected to start on December 1 and the initial contracts will run until March 31 next year.
The initiative is being implemented through the Basic Education Employment Initiative.
The education assistants will, among others, support teachers with technical preparations of the classroom for teaching and learning and ensure that teaching materials are available and ready for use; assist with the reading programme for the foundation phase; support teachers in libraries, science laboratories, IT laboratories and technical workshops; as well as provide after-school support to learners where applicable.
General school assistants will assist in administration, data capturing, issuing of textbooks and record keeping; general maintenance; care and support; and IT support.
“The initiative is targeting youth between the ages of 18 and 35 years old . . . with minimum matric or equivalent qualification. A candidate with tertiary qualification, preferably in teaching, will be given first preference,” said the statement.
Candidates for general school assistants should have relevant technical or vocational skills in the related fields such as maintenance skills, plumbing and painting.
Application forms for the posts can be obtained from all schools in the province.
