Four members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are expected to be charged with conspiracy to commit crime following their arrest at a gold mine in Welkom.
According to the police, the four men, clad in military uniform and travelling in two white vehicles, forced their entry into the Kudu Mine Shaft premises claiming they had been deployed to the mine.
However, security personnel at the mine called the police to report the suspicious “deployment”.
“On arrival, the police questioned the men about their presence at the mine shaft, and they alleged that they were deployed there by a certain police officer from Welkom,” Free State police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said in a statement.
“Their vehicles were searched and a variety of military clothing items and vehicle registration numbers were found.
“Both vehicles were fitted with military registration numbers though it was later discovered that they do not belong in the military fleet.
“The four SANDF officials were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit crime after military police also confirmed that they were not deployed at the mine.”
The four are expected to appear in court soon.
