The Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Tuesday postponed a case against 27-year-old Mokheseng Jafta Mofokeng who is accused of breaking into the SABC premises in the Free State capital in the early hours of Sunday.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Free State spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said, in a brief statement, the case was postponed to January 25 for further investigations.

Tuesday’s proceedings were held in the absence of the accused as he is currently in hospital where he is recovering from a gunshot wound.

He is facing charges of business burglary, trespassing and malicious damage to property.

It is alleged that a security officer was in the SABC control room when he saw, through security cameras, that there was an intruder inside the building.

Security officers went to investigate the apparent security breach and were allegedly attacked by Mofokeng.

Mofokeng was shot and injured during the scuffle with security officers.

Meanwhile, the Free State Working Committee of the ANC which met on Monday to consider reports on several issues facing the community has described the SABC invasion as a worrying incident.

The party said it had warned in the past that there is “need to defend our democratic gains (from) those hell-bent on reversing the gains of our democracy”.

It said the growing number of cases of vandalism at national key points indicates efforts to destroy institutions that are the backbone of the country’s democracy.

“We, therefore, condemn in the strongest terms the malicious intentions to bring instability and reverse the gains of our democracy.

“We request all security agencies to leave no stone unturned in finding all the perpetrators of these devious acts,” read part of the statement.

The party encouraged community members to assist the police by reporting any sign of such criminality.
