The Free State education department says it will hire over 16 000 young people for the positions of education assistants and general school assistants under Phase 2 of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative.

The opportunities available include: education assistant – curriculum; education assistant – ICT-e/cadres; education assistant – reading champions; general assistant – child and youth care worker; general assistant- handyman and general assistant sports and enrichment.

The positions are open to all South African residents aged 18-35 years old. The applicants should not be turning 36 before March 31, 2022.

Provincial education spokesperson Howard Ndaba told The Free Stater by telephone that consideration will be given to those who have not worked in government in the last six months, among other issues.

“The positions are open for youths who are currently not in education, training, or receiving any form of government grant,” said Ndaba.

“Young people with disability and women are encouraged to apply,” he added.

Ndaba said successful candidates will also receive training in various fields which they can use in future.

Preference for the education assistant positions will be given to applicants with post-school qualifications.

However, no matric is required for the positions of handyman as well as sports and enrichment assistants.

Applicants are encouraged to select schools near their homes.

Those interested can use the zero-rated platform: sayouth.mobi/p/dbe to apply.

The closing date for all applications is October 3.

The contract period for those successful will be from November 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

The Presidential Employment Stimulus seeks to mitigate the devastating economic challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the provincial education department is running a three-day induction programme for the newly appointed council for School Governing Bodies (SGB).

During the exercise, the council members will be inducted on the responsibilities of SGBs at school level as well as the separation of the responsibility of management and governance in schools, among others.
