Two more people in the Free State have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number in the province to nine.

The figures were released by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Sunday night when he gave a national update in which he revealed 34 more people in the country had tested positive for the coronavirus, pushing the number to 274.

“As of today, South Africa now has 274 confirmed cases of COVID-19,” Mkhize said in a statement.

“This means there has been an increase of 34 from yesterday’s announcement.”

The latest cases to be confirmed in the Free State involve a 49-year-old-woman and a 26-year-old man.

The statement does not indicate how the pair contracted the virus which causes acute respiratory complications and is mainly spread through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze.

It also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.

Gauteng still has the highest number of confirmed cases at 132, followed by the Western Cape with 88. KwaZulu-Natal has 36 cases.
