THE Cheetahs secured a hard-fought 22-18 victory against Zebre Parma in a memorable Challenge Cup encounter in Amsterdam on Sunday.

Despite a shaky second half, the Free State side held their nerve to claim a crucial win in their European campaign.

Zebre wasted no time making their mark, opening the scoring just 90 seconds into the match with a successful penalty kick.

Moments later, Cheetahs fullback Michael Annies showcased individual brilliance, chipping ahead and regathering to cross the tryline.

Flyhalf Ethan Wentzel added the conversion, giving the Cheetahs an early 7-3 lead.

The Italian outfit responded swiftly after a loose pass from Wentzel was intercepted and flung wide to winger Simone Gesi, who scored in the corner.

Zebre’s quick counterattack left the Cheetahs trailing 8-7 after 25 minutes.

A penalty kick from Zebre saw them edge further ahead to 10-8.

The lead continued to change hands as both teams traded penalty kicks.

Zebre nudged ahead again, 11-10, but the Cheetahs hit back just before halftime.

Jeandre Rudolph finished off a clever move started by Wentzel, who chipped ahead and gathered before linking with Rudolph to score.

Wentzel’s conversion saw the Cheetahs take a 17-11 advantage into the break.

Zebre came out firing in the second half, executing a well-worked lineout move that led to a driving maul and a try for hooker Tommaso Di Bartolomeo.

Flyhalf Thomas Dominguez slotted the conversion to put Zebre back in front by 18-17.

The Cheetahs struggled to find their rhythm, with poor handling and lineout issues hampering their progress.

They made nine handling errors in total, giving Zebre ample opportunities to press their advantage.

However, a turning point came when Munier Hartzenburg launched a 50-metre counterattack, bringing the Cheetahs deep into Zebre territory.

Although the initial drive was held up over the line, the Cheetahs maintained pressure.

Just when it seemed the game might slip away, Cohen Jasper provided the spark the Cheetahs needed.

The replacement back showed impressive pace to dive over in the corner, securing the decisive try.

Wentzel missed the conversion, but the Cheetahs held on for a 22-18 win.

Rudolph was named Man of the Match for his relentless work rate and crucial try.

The victory gives the Cheetahs a vital boost in their Challenge Cup campaign.

They now turn their attention to next weekend’s clash against Lyon, where they will look to build on this momentum.
