THE Cheetahs have assembled their strongest possible squad for a crucial EPCR Challenge Cup encounter against Zebre this Sunday at the NRCA Stadium in Amsterdam.
With their tournament hopes hanging in the balance, a victory is essential for the Free State side to keep their Round of 16 aspirations alive.
After a nail-biting draw against Perpignan and a narrow defeat to Cardiff, the Cheetahs currently sit fifth in Pool One.
With only the top four teams from each pool advancing to the knockout stage, this clash against Zebre is a do-or-die affair.
Zebre, who are still seeking their first pool-stage win, will be equally motivated to make an impact, setting the stage for a high-stakes, thrilling contest.
Cheetahs head coach Izak van der Westhuizen emphasised the magnitude of the challenge, acknowledging Zebre’s strengths and the importance of a united team effort.
“Zebre is a good side upfront and has a strong attacking game. We’re not taking this game lightly. We know that we are up for a big fight,” Van der Westhuizen said.
“The Cheetahs represent Bloemfontein and the region, and we want to make all our supporters proud. We play for each other and for our fans. The pressure is always there to make our people proud.”
Despite a spate of injuries to key senior players, Van der Westhuizen expressed confidence in the squad’s depth and resilience.
“Injuries are part of the game. It allows younger players to step up and show that they deserve to play at this level. The vibe in the camp is good, and we have a few youngsters eager to raise their hands,” he added.
Team captain Victor Sekekete echoed the coach’s sentiments, highlighting the positive atmosphere within the squad after the festive season break.
“Returning after the festive season, it was clear that the guys needed a break. We are a family-orientated team, and the guys came back rejuvenated. The bodies had time to rest, and the energy in training has been fantastic,” Sekekete said.
The Cheetahs starting line-up includes experienced campaigners like Aranos Coetzee and Louis van der Westhuizen, while emerging talents such as Prince Nkabinde and Ethan Wentzel will be keen to make their mark.
The match kicks off at 15:00 CET (16:00 local time), with Irish referee Peter Martin officiating.
Assistant referees Stuart Gaffkin and Johnny Erskine, along with TMO Brian MacNeice, complete the officiating team.
With everything to play for, the Cheetahs will be looking to deliver a performance that not only keeps their European campaign alive but also brings pride to their supporters back home.
