A 30-year-old man from Phuthaditjhaba, eastern Free State, is on the run after he allegedly killed his mother before chopping up her body and packing some of the pieces into a plastic bag.
His father however arrived at their Riverside home while he was busy packing his mother’s remains into the plastic bag in the garage.
The father also fell victim to the son who viciously attacked him with a knife and had to be rushed to hospital where he is fighting for his life.
Police spokesperson for the area, Captain Phumelelo Dhlamini, said in a statement the woman who has been identified as Modiehi Khodumo Mokoena, 65, is believed to have been killed between Monday and Tuesday morning when the crime was discovered.
“It is alleged that the husband of the deceased, Motsumi Joseph Mokoena, arrived home and found his son inside the garage packing the remains of his mother into a plastic bag,” said Dhlamini.
“When his father tried to inquire about what was happening the son took out a knife and stabbed him on the chest and as a result he is admitted in hospital with serious stab wounds,” he added.
The suspect is said to have fled after attacking his father and police are appealing to anyone with information that could lead to his arrest to come forward.
According to the police, the suspect is slim in built, about 1.5 metres tall with natural hair and has no beard.
He was last seen wearing a striped T-Shirt and black jeans.
Cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened and police are investigating.
