A 21-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly breaking in at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein and setting a storeroom on fire on Thursday.
Police spokesperson for Mangaung Metro, Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane, said in a statement the incident happened along Goddard Street at the campus.
He said a security officer who reported the matter said he was called to the site to assist with two suspects believed to have forced entry into the store room and burnt it.
“One male suspect managed to escape but the female was apprehended and handed over to the police,” said Covane.
He said a case of burglary at business premises and arson was opened at Parkweg Police Station.
The suspect will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Friday.
A few weeks ago, a first-year student at the CUT was arrested for attempted arson after he tried to burn the engineering block at the campus.
The student and an alleged accomplice – who fled the scene – tried to burn the BHP Building in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology using a homemade explosive containing highly inflammable liquids.
The bottle missed the building and hit a tree.
