Three suspects believed to be part of a gang responsible for a reign of terror in the gold mining community of Meloding have been arrested after they allegedly teamed up with other members who are still at large to rape a 21-year-old woman over a period of two consecutive days.
About 10 gang members are believed to have taken turns to rape the woman.
Lejweleputswa district police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said in a statement the incident happened on January 28 at about 10pm when the woman was in her rented room in Meloding township when 10 men, including her boyfriend, entered the room carrying knives.
The suspects are all believed to be known to her.
“They took turns . . . raping her and the same suspects came the following day . . . the victim was gang-raped again by the suspects,” said Thakeng in the statement.
The daring suspects, according to the police, came around 8pm on the second day and continued with their heinous attack on the woman.
A case of rape was registered for further investigation and, on February 8, members of the Welkom Public Order Policing Reaction Team and Crime Intelligence followed up information that resulted in the arrest of three suspects aged 25, 29 and 30 years.
“A manhunt continues for the other seven gangsters. Those arrested will appear in the Virginia Magistrates Court soon,” Thakeng added.
