Police in QwaQwa have arrested a 29-year-old man from Makgaolwaneng Village after he sought medical treatment at a local hospital following a tussle with a woman he attempted to rape but was fiercely bitten on the ear and finger.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele said the woman, aged 22, told the police that she was attacked on Sunday night at about 22:30 while walking home alone from a nearby tavern.
“Apparently, she was approached by a man known to her who suddenly grabbed and tried to strangle her but she fought back and managed to push him away,” said Makhele in a statement.
He said the complainant further alleged that she tried to run away but because she was under the influence of liquor, she couldn’t go far or fast enough to escape the attack.
The suspect, according to Makhele, soon caught up with the woman and grabbed her before forcing her to the ground.
It’s further alleged that the suspect tried to undress both himself and the woman in a bid to rape her but he found it difficult because the victim fought hard to free herself.
“She managed to bite the suspect’s right ear and the right-hand middle finger which forced the suspect to leave her,” said the police spokesperson.
The suspect was traced and found at Elizabeth Ross District Hospital while looking for medical treatment.
He was immediately arrested and detained by the police.
A case of attempted rape is being investigated and the suspect is expected to appear before the Tseki Magistrates Court this Wednesday on a charge of attempted rape.
