The ANC Youth League in the Free State is expected to brief the media on Wednesday morning on its views on the candidate selection process for the forthcoming local government elections and appointment of interim regional committees in the province.
The convener of the ANCYL Provincial Congress Preparatory Committee (PCPC), Katleho Mangoejane, is expected to give an outline on the number of youths set to contest for seats in municipalities across the province on November 1 and how important it is for young men and women to go out and vote.
When the PCPC held its first meeting at the beginning of this month, it stressed that it wanted more young people under the age of 35 to contest for seats as ward and proportional representation candidates at all municipalities.
This, they said, could “help bring the much-needed vigour, commitment and innovative approaches to what are seemingly moribund municipal councils”.
The PCPC has also emphasised that the local government is the most challenged sphere of government and believes that more attention, energy and resources must be dedicated to making local government work far more effectively.
“If local government works more effectively and is more transformative, it will contribute significantly to advancing the NDR (National Democratic Revolution) but if it does not perform better, our overall transformation will be severely challenged. Local government remains at the coalface of service delivery . . .” according to the PCPC.
