A top cop has been assigned to lead the probe into the killing of five family members in a Free State village at the weekend.
Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Solly Lesia has appointed Thabo Mofutsanyana district commander Major Jan Tsotsetsi to lead the investigation into the incident that took place in Marakong Village, Namahadi, QwaQwa.
The killings are believed to have occurred late Saturday into early hours of Sunday.
When the police arrived at the crime scene, they found the body of Moliehi Thoabala, 38, with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
The body of her husband, Safolo Mofokeng, 36, was found burnt in the house.
In another house, they found the bodies of Relebohile Lemeko, 48, her daughter Masabata Lemeko, 25, and son, Tatolo Lemeko, 22, also burnt.
An 11-month-old baby was allegedly hit with a knobkerrie on the nose and is said to be receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The motive for the killings is still unknown and cases of murder, arson and attempted murder have been registered for further investigation.
The police have asked members of the public to assist with information that may lead to the identification and/or arrest of the perpetrators.
