Bloemfontein police are investigating two cases of murder and one of attempted murder following a suspected mob justice incident which occurred in the early hours of Thursday in the Free State capital.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele said in a statement the attack happened at a block of flats in Brandwag just after 2am.
“Members of the police were called to the scene . . . where it was alleged that a group of unidentified people had assaulted a male,” he said in the statement.
“The victim was found with injuries to the head and a broken arm. He was taken to hospital where he is recovering. His full identity is yet to be confirmed,” he added.
And as the police were leaving the scene, he said they came across the body of an unknown man with multiple injuries to the head and legs.
A second body which has been identified as that of Lucion Vries and is also a resident of the same block of flats was later found with head injuries.
“It is not yet clear what the three victims were being accused of. No one has been arrested at this stage,” said the police spokesperson.
The matter is being investigated by Park Road detectives.
Makhele urged residents to refrain from acts of mob justice.
“These barbaric acts give a false sense of justice, disturb police work and are criminal,” he said.
Police are appealing to those with information on the attacks to come forward.
