Free State farmer killed, son stabbed

Staff Reporter

Police in the northern Free State have launched a manhunt for unknown suspects after a farmer was shot and killed while his son was left injured.

In a statement, police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele said a domestic worker made the gruesome discovery at Swartpan Farm in Hennenman at about 5am this morning after she was called by the deceased’s wife who was worried as she could not get hold of her husband and son.

“The domestic worker alerted relatives after she found the 56-year-old farmer and his 26-year-old son injured,” said Makhele.

“Other farmers and the police were activated and the farmer was declared dead at the scene, whilst the son was referred to a hospital for treatment,” he added.

It is alleged that the farmer was attacked in the house and shot on the head, while it is believed the son was overpowered on his arrival and stabbed at the back.

Police say two to three handguns are believed to have been stolen during the attack.

“It is currently unknown how many suspects are involved and if they used any mode of transportation to flee from the crime scene,” said Makhele.

Police are investigating a case of murder and house robbery.

The farm attack comes about a month after a young farm manager was brutally killed at De Rots Farm in Paul Roux, to the east of the province.

Brendon Horner, 21, was found killed at the beginning of October.

His body was tied to a pole and is believed to have died from strangulation.

He had injuries to the face and stab wounds to the neck.

Police are appealing for anyone with information on the latest incident to contact Captain James Mahlatsi, detective commander at Hennenman, on 082 4530 806 or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
