Mangaung Metro Municipality is concerned about the latest resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the city and has warned residents not to drop their guard as the country remains prone to a second wave of the pandemic.
A statement released by municipal spokesperson Qondile Khedama said the city is worried residents have become complacent and are no longer following the health protocols set out to minimise the spread of the acute respiratory disease.
“With the country having moved to Alert Level 1 of the COVID-19 Risk Adjustment Strategy, Mangaung Metro has noted an increase of non-compliance to health and safety protocols in the city,” said the statement.
“A lot of people are going about their daily lifestyles without masks, visiting entertainment places, crowded shopping centres and malls, events and social gatherings.
“Social gatherings and parties over weekends have increased, with patrons ignoring health measures which can save lives.”
Scientists, according to the statement, have warned that the risk of a second wave still exists and is high.
On the weekend of October 10, Khedama said the city registered 343 new cases of COVID-19 in comparison to the national figure of 1 575 cases.
“This means that Mangaung accounted for 20 percent of the cases of the day,” the statement said.
“(From) 12-18 October 2020, 699 new cases were registered in our city . . .
“Despite the easing of restrictions, the community is reminded that the virus has not eased and is urged to observe and follow all COVID-19 protocols.
“Residents and businesses must act responsibly to ensure that no ‘COVID super-spreader event’ erupts.
“Businesses like taverns, bars, clubs, etc, can easily lose their good reputation and such incidents might lead to the closing of such businesses.
“Following the easy rules of Alert Level 1 will combat the spread and guarantee a safer city for all.”
In terms of the Alert Level 1 disaster regulations, all businesses have a responsibility to ensure:
- No person enters a premises without a face mask
- Everyone entering must be sanitised
- Ensure social distancing in the venue/area
Failure to adhere by clients, the owner or the person in charge will be held liable.
Attendance of funerals and events under Level 1 are limited to only 100 persons and all indoor venues may allow 50 percent of venue capacity but to a maximum of 250 persons.
Outdoor venues are restricted to 50 percent of venue capacity up to a maximum of 500 persons.
