The Free State Department of Education has suspended a Grade 12 learner from Mophate Secondary School in Bothaville after the pupil allegedly threw mud at a teacher while she was teaching in class.
Education MEC Tate Makgoe posted on his Twitter account on Wednesday that the learner has been suspended for five days.
“We frown upon any form of violence in our schools,” said Makgoe, urging learners to maintain a high level of discipline and respect for their teachers.
The learner is expected to appear before the school’s disciplinary committee on Friday.
“The department will further investigate the incident and offer psycho-social support to learners and teachers who witnessed the incident,” he added.
The incident is believed to have happened on Monday as the teacher posted details of her ordeal on Facebook, claiming it was actually sewage that had been thrown at her by the learner.
“So today the child chose to pour me sewage while I was teaching,” said the teacher whose Facebook name is Gigigoldy Mpitse.
She also posted a photo of herself in the spoiled clothes and a video of an exchange the learner was having with other teachers soon after the incident.
“He came to my class and just poured it on me. (He) was even threatening my colleague that he would meet him on the street,” she wrote on her Facebook page.
