A 62-year-old man has been arrested after two women were found dead in his house in Bloemfontein.
The two women, aged 50 and 56, had stab wounds to their necks.
“Kopanong police were summoned to a house in Chris Hani on Sunday after two bodies of females were found,” the police said in a brief statement.
“It is suspected the incident happened between Friday and Saturday morning as both victims were last seen on Friday.”
The police said investigations were still underway to establish what led to the gruesome murders.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court soon on two counts of murder.
Meanwhile, Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister David Mahlobo and his counterpart from the Transport Department, Dikeledi Magadzi are expected in Bloemfontein on Tuesday for an engagement with civic organisations, community policing forums and religious leaders on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and gender-based violence.
The pair are the district champions deployed to Mangaung Metro as part of the newly established District Development Model.
Under the model, ministers and deputy ministers are deployed by cabinet to specific metros and districts to enhance the capacity of the state across the country.
In support of this critical initiative, Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela has deployed MECs Motshidisi Koloi and Mokalo Mohale as Mangaung Metro champions to work with Mahlobo and Magadzi.
“The Mangaung district champions’ visit will focus on COVID-19, gender-based violence and other service delivery related issues . . . the community engagement will be done through stakeholders, councillors and community representatives,” said a statement from the government.
