Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein has unveiled a board of remembrance in honour of six healthcare staff at the institution who have lost the battle against COVID-19.
Acting chief executive officer Motseoa Mabitle, who unveiled the board which carries the names of the health workers during a ceremony on Wednesday, said the move was a way of showing appreciation for the departed staff.
“This board of remembrance . . . will set a trend within the health fraternity in the Free State for an increased level of appreciation and recognition of the departed health workers and those who are still alive who continue to put a brave face in the midst of the intrusive COVID-19,” read part of a statement issued after the event.
The deceased healthcare workers are:
- Sister Cynthia Sebolai – professional nursing assistant
- Sister Wandi Potsane – professional nursing assistant
- Ms Modiehi Makhele – food services aide
- Ms Monika Rakhosi – cleaning services
- Ms Lala Phethoka – cleaning services
- Ms Sibongile Mtshayi – assistant manager: labour relations
The provincial health department says a total of 30 healthcare workers have succumbed to the disease in the Free State.
About 2 742 healthcare workers have been infected and 2 306 have recovered.
There are currently 331 active cases.
Overall, the Free State has now recorded 567 deaths from COVID-19.
There are 35 603 confirmed cases of the disease and 21 174 people have recovered.
