A Grade 7 learner from Amohelang Primary School in Botshabelo died Wednesday afternoon after collapsing at school.

She was 13 and the cause of death has not yet been established.

In a statement, Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe said he was shocked and saddened by the death of the learner.

“I am really sad and shocked on hearing this piece of news. May her soul rest in peace,” Makgoe said in a statement released late Wednesday.

The MEC wished the learner’s family, schoolmates, teachers and all staff at the school strength and courage to go through the difficult period.

“Our hearts ache for you. We are deeply sorry for your loss. Please accept our condolences and may prayer help and comfort you,” he said.

The provincial education department said a team will be dispatched Thursday to offer counselling to the learners, teachers, support staff as well as the family of the deceased.

It would not speculate on the cause of the learner’s death saying an investigation will establish what transpired.

“The circumstances leading to the learner’s death will be investigated and the cause is still unknown,” the department said in the statement.
