A 37-year-old man from Marquad in Thabo Mofutsanyana district has succumbed to COVID-19 complications, the Free State health department has announced.
The death brings the province’s tally to 10.
“He had underlying health conditions and was hospitalised at Universitas Academic Hospital where he eventually died,” provincial health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said in a brief statement Tuesday night.
The Free State has now recorded a total of 370 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 162 recoveries.
This means there are 198 active cases.
At least 2 150 605 people have been screened across the province and 31 936 tests have been conducted by the National Health Laboratory Service.
Health officials have expressed concern at the rapid increase in cases in Xhariep district which has become the new epicentre in the province with 81 confirmed cases and two deaths.
The cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa now stands at 52 991.
A further 82 COVID-19-related deaths have been reported with 61 coming from the Western Cape, 11 from the Eastern Cape and 10 from Gauteng.
This brings the total number of deaths in the country to 1 162.
The Western Cape has the highest number of deaths at 890, followed by the Eastern Cape with 138.
