UFS eases entry requirements for health sciences

Staff Reporter

The University of the Free State (UFS) will allow students applying to study health sciences next year to use their Grade 11 end-of-year results as some of the standard requirements cannot be met due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ideally, students are mainly required to present their results for the National Benchmark Tests and Grade 12 June examinations.

But these will not be a requirement because schools across South Africa have remained closed since March in line with the national lockdown put in place by the government in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

“We understand that the current COVID-19 situation is raising many questions for matriculants who wish to apply for university study in 2021,” said a statement released by the UFS this Thursday.

The due date for applying to the university’s faculty of health sciences remains May 31, 2020.

In addition to the Grade 11 final examination results, applicants will be required to submit a school value-added form and a confirmation of good health by a medical practitioner.

Those applying for occupational therapy selection can submit a letter of motivation not more than 250 words long, instead of proof of a visit to an occupational therapy practice.

The supporting documents, according to the UFS, can be submitted at a later stage when the lockdown levels are eased to make it possible to have the forms completed by the respective professionals.
