Two students from Central University of Technology (CUT)’s Bloemfontein campus have tested positive for COVID-19, the institution has confirmed.

This brings to four the total number of coronavirus cases at the university since the outbreak of the acute respiratory disease in the country.

The latest cases will however not disrupt lectures and other business at the institution as the two have been studying from home owing to the restrictive national lockdown regulations.

“Both students were studying from home and thus did not come into contact with the campus or any other students,” CUT said in a statement issued Wednesday.

One of the students is receiving medical care and self-isolating at home while the other is at Universitas Hospital in Bloemfontein.

“They are receiving constant emotional support from the university through constant communication with them,” the statement added.

CUT vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Henk de Jager, wished the students a speedy recovery and encouraged them to maintain a positive mentality.

“We understand the strain caused by COVID-19 . . . and we encourage them to continue to empower themselves with true and verifiable information by regularly checking in with reputable news sources and our CUT COVID-19 information hub,” de Jager said.

The university said strict health and hygienic standards including screening and observing social distancing will be maintained at all times to limit the spread of the disease.

CUT reported its first case of COVID-19 on June 26 after a staff member tested positive.

On July 3, the university confirmed its second case and the first one involving a student at its Welkom campus.
