THE Free State is positioning itself as a must-visit inland tourism destination with an immersive outdoor experience set for later this month.
The provincial Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) will host the Free State Camp-out Experience and 4×4 Eco Challenge from 21 to 23 November 2025 at the scenic Tussen Die Reviere Nature Reserve near Bethulie.
The two-day adventure aims to reconnect locals and tourists with nature, promote eco-tourism and showcase the wild beauty of the province’s lesser-known landscapes.
The event’s theme underscores a message that the Free State is more than a place to pass through – it’s a destination waiting to be explored.
Located just 15km from Bethulie in the Xhariep District, the reserve sits at the confluence of the Caledon (Mohokare) and Orange (Senqu) rivers.
The dramatic meeting of the waters is framed by rugged terrain, diverse flora and roaming wildlife, including springbok, zebra, kudu, buffalo and black wildebeest.
Visitors will have access to over 120 kilometres of dirt roads, self-catering chalets, camping grounds, conference facilities and a 4×4 route that winds past striking rock formations.
The reserve’s rich ecosystem also features birdlife such as fish eagles and secretary birds, while lush willow trees and wild olive fringe the riverbanks.
DESTEA MEC Ketso Makume said the camp-out and 4×4 challenge is designed to create lasting memories, offering something for every adventurer – from families enjoying the scenery to avid off-road explorers.
“With its scenic countryside, gorgeous sunsets and fascinating landmarks rich in history, all travellers are invited to indulge in its platteland experiences,” he said.
“Campers will stay in tents and engage in activities such as sitting by the campfire, game drives, a potjiekos challenge and witnessing the unique hidden gem where the Caledon River kisses the Orange.”
The tourism initiative is expected to boost local activity and encourage a deeper appreciation for the province’s natural heritage. – Staff Reporter
