Free State police are looking for an unknown number of suspects who overpowered a security guard at Malebaleba Primary School in Kutloanong in Odendaalsrus, near Welkom, before making off with several computers and cash.
Police say the 43-year-old security guard was on duty when he saw an unknown man walking within the school premises with a torch.
Captain Stephen Thakeng, the police spokesperson for the area, said one shot was fired and the alleged criminals forced their way to where he was stationed.
“A crowbar was used to forcefully open the classroom where the security officer was,” Thakeng said in a statement.
“At gun point, he was taken to another classroom where both his hands and feet were tied up with electric wire.”
The suspects reportedly then proceeded to the staff room where they took many valuables, including four HP laptops, four Proline CPUs, five HP laptops, five Ace notepads, two HP computer CPUs, two Huawei routers, a hybrid intercom system, a grey Defy microwave, and a safe with an undisclosed amount of cash.
“The security guard was only able to untie himself after four hours. He did not sustain any injuries and he was able to rush to the fence where he screamed for help,” said Thakeng.
“Some residents then stopped a police vehicle that was passing by.”
A case of business robbery was registered for further investigation.
Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects should call Detective Constable Modise Kotsi of Odendaalsrus Detective Services on 082 301 2797 or the Police Emergency number 08600 10111. – Staff Reporter
