ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa has promised Mangaung residents the party will bring in a mayor that will have the interests of the people at heart and work to improve service delivery in the city.
He said this on the second and final day of his campaign mission in the Free State for the local government elections set for November 1.
“We are going to elect a new mayor that is going to work for the people of Mangaung,” said Ramaphosa.
He acknowledged the poor service delivery in Mangaung but was quick to point out that divisions in the party played a role in that.
Ramaphosa called for unity in the party and promised the gathering in Phahameng – one of his stop-overs in Mangaung – that the party would like to see more young people and women assuming leadership positions in local government.
The president urged people to go out in their numbers to vote for the ANC on election day so that the party can win with an overwhelming majority and be able to implement its programmes aimed at “improving services and quality of life in all communities”.
Mangaung residents have over the years called on the government to create employment opportunities in the city as well as to award major contracts to local businesses.
The city is still battling to do away with pit latrines which have been blamed on the continued increase in informal settlements.
