A Matjhabeng Local Municipality councillor has been denied bail after he allegedly attempted to kill his wife last weekend.
Sephiri Jan Diphoko, 43, who is ward councillor for Meloding, appeared in the Virginia Magistrates Court on Tuesday facing a charge of attempted murder.
The case was postponed to May 7 to allow for more investigations.
According to the police, his wife, Selwane Diphoko, 46, reported that she was stabbed and severely assaulted by the suspect on Sunday at about 16:25 at their home in Eureka Park, Meloding.
“The complainant alleges that her husband arrived home intoxicated on the said day,” said provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele in a statement.
“A squabble ensued between the couple which led to the councillor assaulting and stabbing his wife multiple times with a kitchen knife,” he added.
Makhele said it is also alleged that the councillor after the ordeal, took a rope and attempted to hang himself from the ceiling trap door. The wife however managed to cut the rope with a knife and he fell on the floor.
She then went to report the incident to the police.
A case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was initially opened but it was later changed to attempted murder.
