Xhariep district records first COVID-19 death

Staff Reporter

Xhariep district in the southern Free State has recorded its first COVID-19 fatality as the province reported two new deaths to bring the tally to eight.

The latest deaths occurred in Bethulie in Xhariep and Bloemfontein in Mangaung.
Provincial health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi told The Free Stater that the two did not have underlying health conditions and that contact tracing teams have been deployed to ensure that all contacts are traced and tested.
“The department is paying special attention to Bethulie in particular and the entire Xhariep district in general as we have to stop it from becoming an epicentre by any slightest possible chance,” said Mvambi.

Mangaung now has a total of seven deaths due to coronavirus infections.

Figures released by the Free State health department indicate there are now 219 confirmed cases in the province, with 128 recoveries.

Given the eight deaths, it means the province now has 83 active cases of the deadly disease.

“Cumulatively, we have only had 34 people admitted into hospital and 554 at our supervised quarantine sites,” the provincial health department said in a brief breakdown of the figures.

A total of 1 720 565 people have been screened and 3 637 of the 3 662 known contacts have been traced.

The department said 26 322 tests have been conducted by the National Health Laboratory Science while private labs have done just over 9 640 tests.
